Accra, Ghana (May 26th, 2025) – Today, Johnson & Johnson Middle East FZ-LLC announced a cool new partnership with the University of Ghana. Their goal? To make it easier for students and staff to get help for mental health issues.
They signed an important agreement called a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a special ceremony in the New Council Chamber at the university. This is a big step towards helping young people who are facing mental health challenges.
Ghana has some serious issues when it comes to mental health care. Many people who need help don’t get it because there aren’t enough resources, and there’s a lot of stigma around mental health.
Did you know that over 98% of people with mental health problems in Ghana don’t receive treatment? That’s a huge number! Also, about 21% of adults in Ghana experience serious feelings of distress at any time.
Emmanuel Antwi, the Country Manager for Johnson & Johnson in Ghana, shared some important thoughts. He said, “Mental health is super important for our communities. We need to work together to break down barriers and make sure everyone has access to care.”
He also mentioned that Johnson & Johnson has been working for over 60 years to help people with mental health issues. This partnership with the University of Ghana shows their commitment to making mental health a priority in the country. Together, they want to create a supportive environment where everyone can get the help they need without feeling ashamed.
The MoU will help both organizations work together on a program called the Resilient Minds Future Leaders Program. This program aims to raise awareness about mental health and reduce the stigma that surrounds it.
The program will help train important people at the university who are responsible for the mental well-being of the community. It will also teach everyone about mental health, focusing on prevention and early help, especially for conditions like schizophrenia. The goal is to improve the health and happiness of everyone at the university.
Additionally, the program will include training for staff who provide mental health services, so they can better support those in need.
Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, emphasized how important mental health is for everyone. She called for a year-round Mental Health Awareness campaign that involves the entire university community.
At Johnson & Johnson, they believe that health is super important. They work hard to create new healthcare solutions that help prevent, treat, and cure diseases. Their goal is to make treatments smarter and more personal, so everyone can have a better chance at a healthy life.
