If you're planning to fly with United Airlines in the U.S., listen up! Starting next week, you'll need to check in a bit earlier if you're only bringing carry-on bags.
Starting June 3, United Airlines is changing its check-in rules. Now, if you're flying domestically, you have to check in at least 45 minutes before your flight takes off. This is the same time limit that applies to passengers who are checking in luggage, but it's 15 minutes earlier than the current rule for those without bags.
A spokesperson from United Airlines said this change will make things easier and more consistent for everyone. Plus, it matches what many other airlines are doing.
Checking in for your flight is super important because it confirms that you’re ready to travel. Most big airlines in the U.S. let you check in online at least 24 hours before your flight, so you don’t have to rush to the airport. But remember, you still need to check in to get your boarding pass!
Other airlines, both in the U.S. and around the world, are also tightening their check-in rules to help flights leave on time, especially since more people are flying again after the COVID-19 pandemic.
When you check in, it helps the airport and airline get ready for your flight. They can confirm your seat and make sure your name is on the list at security. For international flights, the check-in time is usually earlier because they need to check passports and customs.
Let’s see what the check-in rules are for United and some other airlines.
United Airlines
If you're flying with United within the U.S., remember to check in at least 45 minutes before your flight starting June 3. But be careful! Some places, like St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, require you to check in 90 minutes before your flight. For international flights, you need to check in at least an hour before takeoff.
Delta Air Lines
For Delta, if you’re not checking any bags, you can check in at least 30 minutes before your domestic flight. If you have luggage, you need to check in 45 minutes ahead. For international flights, it’s one hour before departure. Just like United, Delta’s rules can change depending on the airport.
American Airlines
If you’re flying American Airlines in the U.S., you also need to check in 45 minutes before your flight. For international trips, the cutoff is 60 minutes ahead of takeoff. Some airports might have different rules, so keep an eye out!
If you have more than just a carry-on bag, make sure to check in at least 45 minutes before your Southwest flight. If you’re not checked in and in the boarding area at least 10 minutes before your flight, your reservation could be canceled! For international flights, you need to check in at least 60 minutes before, but some places, like Aruba, have a 75-minute rule.
Alaska Airlines
With Alaska Airlines, you need to check in at least 50 minutes before your flight if you’re flying within the U.S. For international flights, it’s 60 minutes. Some locations, like Guadalajara, Mexico, require you to check in 90 minutes ahead.
So, remember to check in early for your flights! These new rules are here to help make your travel experience smoother. Safe travels!
