Societe Generale Ghana recently demonstrated its commitment to environmental responsibility with an on-the-ground beach clean-up at Kumasamba La Bamba Beach in Accra. The “Move For Ocean” initiative brought together SG Ghana staff, community members, and environmental partner Plastic Punch Ghana, with a clear focus on supporting global Sustainable Development Goals—specifically, clean water, sanitation, and climate action.
From the early morning, volunteers systematically collected and sorted significant amounts of plastic waste, discarded fishing nets, and other debris along the coastline. This practical effort forms part of SG Ghana’s broader ESG agenda, targeting a reduction in plastic pollution and the advancement of sustainable coastal ecosystems.
SG Ghana’s Managing Director, Hakim Ouzzani, emphasized during his closing remarks, “We are taking decisive steps to protect our oceans, reduce plastic waste, and drive sustainable practices along Ghana’s coast—fully aligning with our ESG commitments and the United Nations’ SDGs.”
The event also featured an educational workshop led by an environmental specialist, highlighting the risks of unchecked marine plastic pollution, which could rise by 190% by 2040 if left unaddressed. SG Ghana took the opportunity to share its wider sustainability initiatives, which include lowering internal carbon emissions and supporting both tree planting and clean water projects.
A notable outcome from the event was the installation of a permanent ‘FishBin’ waste collector at Kumasamba La Bamba Beach, providing a practical solution for responsible waste disposal for all beach visitors.
Throughout the day, sustainable practices were emphasized, such as the use of reusable water bottles and biodegradable packaging, reinforcing SG Ghana’s dedication to operational sustainability and community-driven climate action.
SG Ghana also used the platform to advocate for stronger measures against single-use plastics in Ghana. The initiative concluded with a friendly beach soccer match between SG Ghana staff and Plastic Punch Ghana volunteers, fostering ongoing partnership and deeper community engagement.
