Kim Lars Björkegren the Black Queens’ coach wasn’t exactly thrilled after his squad took a 2-0 hit from South Africa in their first Group C match at WAFCON 2024. Honestly, you could see it on his face: not the return to the big stage they were dreaming about (especially after missing out since 2018). South Africa, aka Banyana Banyana, just ran the show on Monday.
When the whistle blew and it was all over, Björkegren didn’t sugarcoat it. "I mean, sure, I’m bummed about the scoreline, but the way we played? Not so much," he said. He figured it’d be a tight match, and, well, it kinda was just not in the way Ghana hoped.
So now Ghana’s sitting dead last in Group C. Not ideal. That means the pressure’s on for their next game beat Mali on Friday, July 11, or things are gonna get real messy, real fast.
