Kuami Eugene, a prominent name in Ghana’s music scene, recently shared his thoughts on the current state of Ghanaian cinema during an interview with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz. He emphasized that, while he genuinely enjoys Ghanaian movies, he finds them hard to access on international streaming platforms like Netflix. Most local films, he noted, are limited to cinema screenings, which presents a challenge for busy professionals or anyone who can’t regularly make it to theaters.
He went on to highlight some of his favorite talents in the industry, mentioning respected actors such as Agya Koo, Santo, Lilwin, Kwaku Manu, Dr Likee, and Akrobeto, as well as celebrated actresses Nana Ama McBrown and Vivian Jill Lawrence.
Kuami Eugene’s remarks underscore a significant issue for Ghana’s film and entertainment industry: local productions have a strong following domestically, both in cinemas and on television, but lack the digital presence needed to reach a broader, international audience. The underrepresentation of Ghanaian films on global streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showmax continues to limit their visibility and potential for growth.
Industry professionals have called for increased investment, strategic marketing, and improved digital distribution to address these challenges and ensure that Ghanaian cinema reaches its full potential on the world stage.
