Dr. Afriyie clarified that although SMEs and agriculture have not received enough attention over the years, both sectors have enormous potential to change Ghana's economic trajectory.
He claimed that instead of offering long-term answers, the government has not been strategic enough in concentrating on the agriculture sector and SMEs.
"We haven't tried to concentrate the majority of our attention on SMEs strategically enough. SMEs make up 92% of all enterprises in Ghana, employ about 80% of the workforce, provide roughly 60% of the country's GDP, and employ over 2 million people.
"We haven't focused on some areas strategically enough, which will have a multiplicative effect on our economy." On TV3's New Day, March 10, he stated, "All we do is we tend to be on tactical basis solve immediate problem but not be strategic, and that is the major cause of our leaders not trying to focus on some of these areas."
In order to address the nation's food inflation, he wants the 2025 budget, which will be submitted to Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, to offer tax breaks to investors in value chains and agriculture.
Speaking about other areas, Dr. Afryie stated that the budget should outline long-term fixes for the energy sector and the need to revive the cocoa business.
