Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has taken to social media to commend President John Dramani Mahama in light of the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.
In a post accompanied by a photo of the President, the esteemed actor expressed: “Mr. President, I would like to congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedi in the global market. Well done. I am unsure of the specific actions you have taken or are currently undertaking, but I encourage you to continue your efforts. I appreciate it.”
The actor's comments were prompted by the cedi's significant recovery, which has improved from approximately GH₵17 to $1 a few months ago to around GH₵11 to $1 at present.
While the precise reasons for the cedi's appreciation remain a topic of debate, Van Vicker outlined several prevailing theories, including:
- US trade wars
- The Ghanaian government’s reduction in spending
- A lawsuit against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana
- An increase in the supply of dollars
- A forex trend inherited from a previous administration
- Sheer luck
- “Good radiance of whatever”
He remarked, “The true reason may be a combination of two or more of these theories; however, it remains a fact that the Ghana cedi is approximately GH₵11 to $1 today.”
He also expressed concern over some Ghanaians residing abroad who have voiced disappointment regarding the dollar's decline against the cedi, labeling such sentiments as self-centered. He asserted that the current trend is a positive indicator for Ghana's economy.
Van Vicker further commented: “Your Excellency JM, if you can guide us back to 2007, it would be remarkable.”
He was quick to clarify that his remarks were not politically motivated but rather a genuine recognition of progress. “This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgment of commendable work thus far. It is important to recognize merit where it is due. Long live Ghana.”
His statements have garnered attention as the cedi continues to strengthen, igniting public discourse regarding the factors influencing this improvement and its sustainability in the upcoming months.
