The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei II, recently held a special event at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to honor 10 amazing artists. This event was part of the 2025 Inaugural Artist Laureates program.
The artists who received awards include some really talented people like Professor Ablade Glover, Professor Ato Delaquis, El Anatsui, Francis Kwatei Nee-Owoo, Frances Ademola, Peggy Appiah, Kwame Akoto, and three others. Each of these artists has made significant contributions to African art and history.
This ceremony was not just a one-time event; it kicked off a ten-year plan to recognize leaders in the art world and inspire young artists, especially those interested in both traditional and digital arts.
During the ceremony, Otumfuo Osei II talked about how important art is in shaping Ghanaian society. He explained that art has been a big part of Ghana's culture for a long time, even before colonial times.
He said, “Art has always played a vital role in bringing people together in Ghana, from the time before colonial rule to now. Our first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, used art to unite the country and supported many great artists who helped define our vision for independence.”
The event also aimed to attract people who make decisions about art and culture, as well as art lovers from nearby countries like Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, and even a group from the Republic of Seychelles.
This celebration of art is a great way to inspire the next generation of artists and show how important creativity is in our lives!
