The Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has advocated for stricter penalties against individuals who violate the law and incite violence at football stadiums nationwide.
His remarks come in response to recent violent incidents during a Matchday 33 fixture of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League between Basake Holy Stars and Nations FC.
The match was abruptly suspended after players and officials of Nations FC stormed the pitch in protest against a second penalty awarded to the home team. The situation quickly devolved into chaos, leading to Nations FC abandoning the game entirely.
In a troubling development, reports indicate that the owner of Nations FC, Dr. Kwame Kyei, along with the club’s president, Divine Kyei, were assaulted amidst the unrest.
Addressing the issue during an interview on Sporty FM, Minister Adams emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable and enforcing disciplinary measures, regardless of their societal or political influence.
He stated that wrongdoers must face punishment without exception, explaining that ensuring strict accountability is essential for the growth and integrity of the sport in Ghana. He noted that it is only through decisive action that the country, known for its passion for football, can truly benefit.
Adams also expressed concern over the potential long-term impact of such incidents on local football. He cautioned that continued violence at stadiums could push fans away from the domestic league and shift their attention to international competitions.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since confirmed that it has launched an official investigation into the incident.
