Former coach of the Black Stars, Charles Kwabla Akonnor, is speaking out against the growing calls to fire the current coach, Otto Addo. This comes after the national soccer team, Ghana, didn’t make it to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana has won the AFCON four times, but this time, they will miss the tournament for the first time in over 20 years! The 2025 AFCON will take place in Morocco, but sadly, the Black Stars won’t be there.
The team had a rough time trying to qualify. They ended up at the bottom of their group, without winning a single match. Instead, they had three draws and three losses, which made a lot of fans really upset.
Because of this disappointing performance, many fans and sports experts are calling for Otto Addo to be replaced as coach. They believe a new coach might help turn things around.
Despite the tough times, Otto Addo has managed to get the team back on track. They recently won two matches against Chad and Madagascar in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This has given fans a little hope again!
In a chat with Citi Sports, Akonnor shared his thoughts on the situation. He believes it’s important to keep the coaching team stable and not change coaches too often. He said, “I didn’t call for Otto Addo’s sacking after the AFCON qualification setback. The constant hiring and firing can overwhelm the players and disrupt progress.”
The Black Stars recently finished third in a four-nation tournament in London. They are getting ready to play again in September for the World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali. Let’s hope they can keep the momentum going!
