Some guy not a passenger, not even someone who worked there ended up dying at Milan’s Bergamo Airport after getting sucked straight into a jet engine. Yeah, it’s as horrifying as it sounds.
Nobody’s saying how he got onto the runway in the first place. Sacbo (they run the airport) had someone talk to reporters, but the dude wanted to stay anonymous. Can’t really blame him probably doesn’t want the headache.
Everything at the airport basically froze around 10:20 a.m. all flights on pause because of this “problem” on the taxiway, which, I mean, is a pretty massive understatement. Things didn’t get moving again till noon.
Cops and whoever else are poking around, trying to figure out what the hell happened. No word yet on what airline’s plane was involved or how the guy managed to get past security. Nineteen flights ended up canceled, and a bunch more were delayed, so yeah travelers were not having a great day.
Bergamo’s not some random airstrip either. It’s the third busiest airport in Italy, right behind Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa. Usually, the tarmac is locked down tight stuff like this almost never happens.
But, well, it’s not like it’s unheard of. Last year in Amsterdam, someone who worked at Schiphol climbed into a running engine (that was ruled a suicide, by the way). And just before that, over in Salt Lake City, a man squeezed through an emergency exit and ended up dead in a jet engine too. So yeah, rare but not impossible. And definitely not something you ever want to hear about.
