In his first season playing in Spain, the French superstar scored a whopping 31 goals in the league. This also made him the top scorer in La Liga, which is super impressive!
His two goals in Real Madrid's last game of the season helped him secure the top spot in the rankings. He beat out other great players like Victor Gyokeres from Sporting, who scored 39 goals, and Mohamed Salah from Liverpool, who netted 29 goals.
Even though Gyokeres scored more goals than Mbappe, he came in second place. This is because the rankings use a special points system. Goals scored in the top five leagues in Europe—like the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1—are worth two points each.
On the other hand, goals from players in leagues ranked sixth to 22nd, like the Portuguese Primeira Liga, are worth 1.5 points. This is why Gyokeres, despite his higher goal count, couldn't catch up to Mbappe.
Mohamed Salah had a chance to tie with Mbappe if he scored three goals in Liverpool's last match against Crystal Palace. However, he only managed to score once, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
With this win, Mbappe becomes only the third player from Real Madrid to earn the Golden Shoe. The other two are Hugo Sanchez, who won it in the 1989-90 season, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who won it multiple times in 2010-11, 2013-14, and 2014-15.
Gyokeres, who has been rumored to move to Arsenal this summer, couldn't catch up to Mbappe because his league season ended a week earlier. He still had a fantastic season, finishing with 53 goals in 51 games across all competitions after scoring in his team's 3-1 loss to Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final.
Here’s how the top five players ranked in the Golden Shoe competition:
1. Kylian Mbappe - 62 points
2. Victor Gyokeres - 58.5 points
3. Mohamed Salah - 58 points
4. Robert Lewandowski - 54 points
5. Harry Kane - 52 points
What an exciting season for these players!
