The Gbese Mantse Peace Cup is back, baby! They just dropped the official launch, and it's all going down on Sunday, August 17, right at the Accra Sports Stadium. Mark your calendars, seriously.
This isn’t just random football it’s part of the legendary Homowo Festival. Everybody in the Ga State (and, honestly, most of Ghana) knows this is more than a game. It’s about repping unity, peace, and showing off that Ga heritage. Plus, who doesn’t love a good party with some footie thrown in?
This year's clash? Absolute fire. Accra Hearts of Oak are squaring up against Kpando Hearts of Lions. Both teams are dripping in history and, trust me, neither side is coming to play nice. It’s bragging rights for days.
"This year, we are going to have a great competition, with the giant trophy on display & touring every corner of the country before Sunday, August 17" - Sam Anim Addo

Sam Anim Addo yeah, the football bigwig and event mastermind says the chief himself, Nii Ayi-Bonte II (the Gbese Mantse), is running the show. Makes sense, since the man literally kicked a ball around before he wore the crown. Football in his blood, no joke.
Sam’s hyped: “This year, we’re bringing out the beast of all trophies. That cup is doing a whole tour before it lands at the stadium. You’re not ready for this.” So, expect to see that shiny thing popping up everywhere in the next few weeks.
Hearts of Oak, the reigning champs? Oh, they’re not here to mess about. Their comms guy, Kwame Opare Addo, is flexing hard. He’s all about the club’s role in keeping tradition and peace alive. “Look, we’re not just here to play. We’re here to school the next generation. And, yeah, we’re taking the trophy home again.” Confident much? Yep.
He doubles down, too: “Nobody’s letting down the Gbese Mantse. Our coach, our players they all know what’s up. That trophy’s coming back with us.”
But don’t count out Hearts of Lions. Last year, they came up short, but Stephen Botchwey (their admin guy) says they’re hungry: “Big chance for us, first to test ourselves against the big boys, and second, to push the peace message.” They’re eyeing that cup like it’s made of gold (well, maybe it is?).
He adds, “This match set us up last season, and we’re gunning to use it as our launchpad again. Bigger things ahead, watch this space.”
Oh, and for the fans: tickets to the popular stand? Just a fiver GH₵5. Not bad, eh? And before the main event, there’s a colt match plus some epic performances by top Ghanaian music stars. More details dropping soon, so keep your ears open.
Basically, if you miss this, you’re missing out. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
